Raising Children in Fort Worth is Surprisingly Affordable, Study Finds
The study analyzed the costs of childcare across 50 of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. DFW placed 16th on the list for the lowest yearly childrearing costs, with a total figure of $21,926. This is broken down into $10,396 for childcare and $3,002 for additional housing.
In comparison, Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Massachusetts, ranks as the most expensive metro area for raising a child, with annual costs reaching $37,758. The national average cost is $25,181 per year.
The report emphasizes the importance of understanding the costs associated with raising a child for both personal financial planning and public policy. Costs for childcare, additional housing, food, medical necessities, and other expenses vary widely across different locations, with some places incurring much higher expenses.
Within Texas, Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown leads as the most expensive metro area for raising a child, with annual costs totaling $22,406. Other Texas cities, such as Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land and San Antonio-New Braunfels, are more affordable, with annual costs of $21,396 and $21,014, respectively.
To determine the rankings, SmartAsset compared the annual costs for households with two working adults and one child to those of childless households with two working adults, using the MIT Living Wage Calculator to determine expenses such as medical costs, transportation, and food. Schooling costs were not included in the analysis.
